Taolo Modisi
Taolo currently serves as a Non- Executive Director at Botswana Insurance Fund Managers (BIFM), the oldest and largest fund by assets in Botswana with an excess of over $2.5 billion under management. BIFM is a subsidiary of the Sanlam Group and also has regional interests in Southern Africa. Taolo also serves on BIFM’s Credit Committee and is a Non-Executive Director to the BIFM Unit Trust. Taolo is an investor and the Founder of Alpha Reign (Pty) Ltd, an advisory, capital markets and investment firm. Prior to this Taolo Headed up Debt Capital Markets for Southern and Central Africa at Standard Bank Group in Johannesburg, which included eleven different countries across sub-Saharan African. Taolo also worked for Investec Bank in Johannesburg, as a Senior Consultant in the Specialised Finance team covering sub-Saharan Africa.
Taolo acted as a Senior Advisor to the United Nations Economic Commission of Africa (UNECA), advising on Pension Fund Reforms in the continent. She recently worked with senior government officials and pension funds in Angola.
Taolo has significant experience in Debt Capital Markets, Lending, Investment Banking and Treasury. She has placed over USD 10 Billion of issues and advised various Sovereigns, Multinationals, State-Owned Entities, Banks and Corporates. Her transactions have received awards from the likes of EMEA Finance Magazine, The Credit Magazine and The Banker. Taolo was also part of a team that had been consistently ranked number one on the Bloomberg sub-Saharan Africa Bonds League Tables (excluding South Africa).
Taolo has originated a number of firsts in various countries in sub-Saharan Africa. She originated the first commodity-linked note in Africa (excluding South Africa), the first issues for government, corporates, commercial paper, including credit-linked programmes in a number of jurisdictions across the continent. Taolo’s successes in originating and placing issues in sub-Saharan Africa reign from her passion in developing the Capital Markets and Investments into Industries across the continent. In her roles in Banking and Finance she’s been responsible for originating, advising and structuring Debt Capital Market Issues, Lending and Treasury Instruments in sub-Saharan Africa. This included originating and maintaining new client business, as well as structuring and executing issues for various Sovereigns, Banks, State Owned Enterprises, Corporates, Municipalities, Development Finance Institutions and Supranationals. Taolo has also led Property Finance, Acquisition Finance and Senior Lending opportunities in the African Continent.
Taolo has led teams of professionals, whilst at Standard Bank, UNECA and continues to do so in her roles as a Non-Executive Director, Credit Committee Member, Trustee, including in her Advisory and Consultancy Roles. She has spoken at various international conferences discussing capital markets development, investments and funding into sub-Saharan Africa. Taolo is also a Director and Shareholder at Group Three (Pty) Ltd, a family-run business that has interests in Tourism, Property Development and Hospitality.
Taolo has spent over 19 years in Investment Banking, Investment Management and Treasury. She has worked with senior officials at a Chief Executive Officer, Financial Director, Governor and Ministry of Finance level. Taolo is also the Founding Trustee for the Gaositwe Chiepe foundation; a Foundation formed in the name of her grandmother, who was the first female cabinet Minister in Botswana and the first African female to be an Ambassador to the United Kingdom. The Foundation was formed to support children with learning disabilities.
